I Do Not Feel Empty, 3 December 2011
When I say:
(Wanna make something of my love of bibliography? Let’s step inside.*)
I am saying that notes, attribution, and explication are requisite for authors who respect their readers and there is much to be learned beyond the mere matter of “fact” from careful authorship.  One of my favorite all time authors, Kurt Vonnegut subtly, eloquently, and to my mind hilariously, makes this point when in Cat’s Cradle he has the character Claire tell protagonist Jonah that she can tell all sorts of things about a person from how an author has chosen to create an index or bibliography, right down to the author’s sexual preference.
If the point of context and care in referencing is important enough for Vonnegut, well, I think that it is important enough for me to treat respectfully.  So that is why I say, “Let’s step inside.” Instead of going out from bar to alley for a duke it out rough house punch ‘em up, I prefer to step into a bar and sit down and have a drink or three and engage in old fashioned philosophical and literary debate.  Loser pays for the taxi.
